Recent advances in material manufacturing processes allow for greater control of chemical compositions and geometric characteristics at a scale of a few nanometers. Nanogenerators consisting of rows of nanowires with piezoelectric and semiconducting properties have been studied by several American and European teams with promising results. The project presented concerns the design, fabrication and characterization (structural, mechanical and electrical) of a nanogenerator based on zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO). The prototype will convert a mechanical energy (naturally occurring in our environment) into electrical energy to power a component (sensor or actuator) low consumption (of the order of µW).
