The viability of PEMFC type systems in technological and economic terms is mainly conditioned by the cost of the device on the one hand and by its lifetime in operating conditions on the other hand. It is particularly in the Membrane-Electrode (AME) assembly that technological locks need to be lifted. AMEs consist of two electrodes (anode and cathode) pressed against an ionic conductor. Conventionally, the active layers of PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells) electrodes are prepared from nanodispersed electrocatalysts on a carbon powder and an electrolyte solution such as Nafion® 5 wt% in alcohols. The catalyst of the PEMFC marketed is currently platinum, the industrialization is greatly slowed down. The discovery of a catalytic system having sufficient performance and stability characteristics that is available at a reasonable cost and which is not uncommon remains a very open challenge. In this field it is clear that the development of nanomaterials that accompanies that of nanosciences and nanotechnologies presents serious advantages. These developments present real opportunities to lead to the realization of innovative active PEMFC active layer architectures. This goal is aimed at through two approaches: the realization of architectures of innovative active layers making it possible to produce electrodes comprising catalysts based on noble metals (platinum) in a controlled and very small quantity (of the order of 0.5 to 5 µg.cm -2), of which Activity after assembly with a proton conduction membrane is validated by a stack test. the development of new catalysts comprising a very low platinum or noble metal content or free of platinum or noble metal.
